Man hit over head during Carlisle robbery

A man was hit over the head during a robbery on a Carlisle footpath this morning.

The 26-year-old city man was walking at Stanwix when he was attacked at about 8am.

He was hit on the back of his head and sustained what police say were minor injuries.

His backpack, which contained a phone, a laptop and cash, was stolen.

Police have appealed for information to the attack, which happened on the path behind Eden Cricket Ground, between Eden Bridge and Marlborough Gardens.

Two men were sat on a bench near to where the incident happened. Police say they were in their twenties or early thirties.

One was described as wearing a blue denim hat, with a Burberry print on the peak and possibly wearing a grey tracksuit. The other was said to be wearing a navy blue or black tracksuit and trainers with an orange stripe.

DS David Howard said: "Thankfully incidents such as these are rare in Carlisle, and we are working hard to trace those responsible. I would urge anyone with any information, or who may have been in the area at the time, to get in touch.”

Anyone who can help the investigation should call police on 101.
