Man grew cannabis in bedroom of his Penrith home

A 19-year-old was given a suspended sentence for growing his own cannabis in his bedroom.
Shaun David Howe, of Bridge Street, Penrith, pleaded guilty to producing the class B drug after his landlord called police Windsor Drive, where Howe rented a room.
Officers found about 50 cannabis plants, which were in the early stages of growth, in a metallic-lined heated tent. There were also lamps, bags of compost and fertiliser in the room.
Howe admitted growing the plants, saying he had a heavy cannabis habit – costing him £400 to £500 a month – and had decided to start growing it himself to save money.
At Carlisle Crown Court, Judge Paul Batty QC gave Howe an eight-month detention order, suspended for two years and ordered him to do 100 hours of unpaid work with a six month supervision order.
