The man suffered head, neck, arm, pelvis and chest injuries when he was hit by a lorry on the dual carriageway at Carleton, near M6 junction 42, on the outskirts of Carlisle.

He was treated at the scene by police and ambulance paramedics.

They stabilised his condition before an air ambulance arrived carrying a consultant in emergency medicine.

The helicopter crew anaesthetised the casualty, believed to be in his forties, and treated him for “very serious” chest injuries before flying to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary. The man’s injuries were described as “life threatening”.

The accident happened at 2.45pm on Saturday near the bus shelter opposite the Border Gate Premier Inn.

Police closed the road in both directions initially and the northbound carriageway was blocked for two-and-a-half hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A police spokeswoman said: “We are working to confirm the man’s identity and inform his next of kin.”

The lorry driver was unhurt.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

A Premier Inn employee witnessed the aftermath as she arrived for work at 3pm.

She said: “I could see the man lying there. Cars had stopped and there was a woman attending to him.”

The Teesside-based Great North Air Ambulance ‘Guardian of the North’ was called because ‘Pride of Cumbria’, based at Langwathby, was making a routine transfer of a patient from Whitehaven to Middlesbrough. It flew the injured man to Newcastle in what the crew described as “poor” conditions.

This was the second serious accident on the A6 in north Cumbria in six days.

Father-of-five Andrew Charters, 30, of Wigton, died after his motorbike crashed into a wall near Bulls Head Farm, Calthwaite, last Monday.
