The pensioner had been airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle following the accident on the A596 at Railway Bridge, Wigton, at about 10.40am.

The man - believed to be from Thursby and aged in his 80s - was driving a Ford Fiesta car that was in collision with a Volvo heavy goods vehicle.

The HGV driver, a man aged in his 60s from Silloth, was not hurt.

Fire engines from Aspatria and Carlisle West were sent to the scene and used specialist equipment to cut the man, who sustained head injuries, from his car.

Shortly after the crash, police appealed for the driver of a blue-coloured six wheeler rigid wagon to come forward. He has now done that.

Anyone who saw the collision should call Cumbria’s roads policing unit on 101.
