Man dies after cardiac arrest on Lake District peak

A man has died after collapsing on a Lake District mountain this afternoon.

The 64-year-old, from Lincoln, suffered a cardiac arrest on a peak just off the summit of Helvellyn at around 2pm.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service, which attended the scene, said other walkers tried to resuscitate the man.

Low cloud stopped the air ambulance reaching the casualty and a medic was dropped close by to make his way on foot.

Patterdale and Keswick mountain rescue teams were called out and a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter, which was training nearby, joined the effort.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
