The 22-year-old, from Whitehaven, was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning but died shortly afterwards.

An investigation into what caused the crash has been launched and continues today.

No further details about the dead man’s identity have so far been released.

His passenger, another man aged 22 from Whitehaven, was treated for serious injuries.

His condition was described as “stable” by hospital staff.

The two men were travelling in a red Seat Ibiza which hit several parked cars before coming to rest against a house. They had been driving from the direction of Whitehaven when the crash took place on Moresby Parks Road, Moresby.

Bunches of flowers have been left at the scene, one with a card that reads: “A wonderful son and brother who will always be missed. Love you lots, Mam and Vicky.”

The driver is thought to have lost control on a bridge and collided with a gatepost before the crash. Fire, police and ambulance services were called to Moresby at 2.45am.

The Rev Deacon Stephen Scott, who lives two doors away from the house which was hit, described hearing an “enormous bang” as if a tornado had hit the house at the time of the crash.

Two fire crews from Whitehaven and Workington arrived to find the casualties had both been freed from the car. They helped the ambulance service, provided lighting and made the scene safe before leaving at 3.45am.

The road was closed for five hours while police cleared the scene and launched their probe into what happened.

Officers from west Cumbria’s roads policing unit are leading the investigation into the crash.

They have appealed for anyone with information about what happened to contact PC Martin Rennie on 0845 3300247.
