Man collapses and dies while following Cumbrian hunt

A man from Southwaite, near Carlisle, died on Boxing Day while apparently following the Blencathra Foxhounds.

Police and members of Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were called to the scene on a path at Underskiddaw in the Millbeck area at around noon.

A doctor from the mountain rescue team pronounced the man, believed to be in his 50s, dead at the scene. The coroner’s office has stated that he died of natural causes and police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

Thirteen volunteers from the mountain rescue team helped officers.

It was one of three incidents the team was asked to help with on Christmas and Boxing Day.

On Christmas Day, again around noon, nine members of the team helped bring a 51-year-old man down from Latrigg on the outskirts of Keswick.

He had slipped on muddy ground and suffered suspected ligament damage to his ankle.

The team said members were able to drive up close to him and take an ambulance paramedic to him.

The man was able to limp to the team’s vehicle before it took him to a waiting land ambulance half a mile away. The man was taken to Keswick’s cottage hospital for further checks and treatments.

Following the Boxing Day call-out, the mountain rescue team was alerted once again to another incident at 6pm. Concerns were raised when a walking party on Blencathra had not returned.

The party turned up while details were being investigated and before mountain rescuers had been to the scene.
