Man charged with historic sex assaults in north Cumbria

A man has been accused of sexually assaulting a schoolgirl in a north Cumbrian village more than 20 years ago.

Joseph Benjamin Alcock, who is now 42, faces six charges of indecent assault, five of gross indecency and one of rape.

The offences are alleged to have happened between 1987 and 1990, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

Alcock spoke only to confirm his name and did not enter any pleas.

He will do that when he next appears in court on April 28.

Until then Alcock, who has recently moved to Derby from his previous address in Rolleston-on-Dove, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was remanded on conditional bail.

If a trial is necessary it will probably be held in July.

Have we reached saturation point with bars in the city?

No - the more the merrier. It helps to have choice

Yes - we could do with more specialist shops, not bars

As long as they are not all the same I don't mind how many there are
