Man charged with attempted rape

A Workington man has been charged with attempted rape following a sex attack on a nine-year-old child in the town’s Vulcan Park.

John Robert Newton, aged 26, of Fisher Street, is also charged with assault with intent to commit a sexual offence, voyeurism, two breaches of a sexual offences prevention order, and common assault.

All the alleged offences are said to have taken place in Vulcan Park on Tuesday.

Newton was due to appear before West Allerdale Magistrates on Friday.
