A woman attacked by her partner as she tried to grab his mobile phone told police he tried to bite her nose off.

At Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, Ricky Shane Simpson, 38, pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner of 14 years Teresa Fielding.

The court heard that the relationship between the defendant and his partner had been good but become strained.

On the evening of the attack, on June 10, they had been drinking at their home in Penrith.

Between them they got through a bottle of vodka and Miss Fielding then went to bed but she later got up because she heard the defendant on his phone and suspected he was talking to another woman.

There was then a scuffle as she tried to get his phone, prosecutor Adrienne Harris told the court.

She said: “He grabbed her neck and she grabbed him back but he then bit her nose, biting it for some time.”

When later questioned by police, Simpson, who has three children with his victim, said she would not make it up.

In court Simpson, who has three children with his victim, said: “I am really sorry.”

Simpson, of Askham Crescent, Penrith, said the couple were no longer together but they kept in touch. The court heard that he was convicted in 2007 of assaulting the same woman. Simpson said that his problem arose from his drinking but that he was now seeing a counsellor to help him.

Sentencing was adjourned until July 30 and in the meantime background reports will be prepared.
