A man who beat up his ex-girlfriend after she became pregnant by another man – while he was in prison – will have to wait to be sentenced.

Dylan Bawn, 25, formerly of Frizington, texted the baby’s father asking for a fight and then tried to grab the steering wheel off his ex-girlfriend as she drove in fear towards Cleator Moor.

Prosecutor Becky McGregor told Carlisle Crown Court: “She pulled over at a garage in Whitehaven as she was scared what might happen to her.

“The pair had gone on a journey to McDonald’s in Workington and on the way there he had called her a muppet. He had punched the left side of her face. She tried to get out of the car to diffuse the situation but he said if she left he would smash her face in.”

The court was told that on the way back to Cleator Moor, Bawn had tried to grab the steering wheel off his ex-girlfriend.

Ms McGregor added: “The woman had been punched 12 times and was suffering bruising, swelling to her eye and cheek, and witnesses said she had blood coming from her ears.”

Bawn appeared at court yesterday after admitting assault by beating and assault occasioning actual bodily harm at a previous hearing.

The court was also told that on Boxing Day last year Bawn went to his ex-girlfriend’s address – when she was 10 weeks pregnant – and pushed her during an argument causing her to hit her head against a wall and fall over.

In interview, Bawn, who had been with his partner since 2008, said it was his ex who was violent towards him and that he was acting in self defence.

Kim Whittlestone, for Bawn, said: “Difficulties arose in the relationship when he found out that he wasn’t the father of her child and that she had slept with someone else while he was in custody. He fully accepts that he was not able to deal with the fact that she was pregnant with someone else’s child.”

Bawn will be sentenced at a later date and Recorder Andrew Loveridge said he was keeping all sentencing options open.
