Help for Carlisle families who cannot afford birthday cakes for children

A new group has been set up to help Carlisle families who can’t afford birthday cakes for their children.

The Free Cakes for Kids UK is launching in Carlisle and involves volunteers baking cakes, free of charge and confidentially, with the child’s favourite theme or style in mind.

A group of three full-time bakers and cake decorators are starting the service.

Lisa Wheatcroft, 34, owner at The Sweet Dream Cake Co, is heading the group as coordinator for Carlisle, helped by Gill Talbot owner at Fantasweets and Jill Batey owner at MJ’s Cupcakes.

Lisa, of Alexander Street, off London Road, said: “We would like to appeal to people in Carlisle to get involved in this worthwhile venture.

“We are not only looking for volunteers willing to occasionally bake the birthday cakes, but also those who would like to get involved in other ways such as delivery drivers, marketing, collecting donations like flour and eggs and any other skills people are willing to offer.

“We are so excited to become part of the FCFK UK family. It’s such a worthwhile cause and one close to all of our hearts.”

Lisa started baking when her daughter, who is now 17 months old, turned one.

She said: “It’s just something I really enjoy doing and I took it from there. I like sculpting and shaping cakes and stacking them.

“I first saw the idea about free cakes on Facebook and I looked into it to see if it would be viable here.

“As well as myself, Gill and Jill we need other people who can bake and people who can deliver cakes and donate ingredients.

“I have been in contact with schools as a starting point but we would urge anyone who knows of a child who would not normally get a cake to contact us. There will have to be a set criteria to ensure that the right people are getting cakes.”

Lisa says she will be setting up a Free Cakes for Kids Carlisle Facebook page shortly.

Stephanie Griggs-Trevarthen, network coordinator for FCFK UK, said: “Presents will come and go on birthdays but it's the cake you really remember.

“At Free Cakes For Kids we're not just making cakes – we're making memories.”

Anyone who can help bake, donate flour, sugar, eggs and other ingredients, or even help deliver the cake should contact Lisa on 07706852014.

Have your say

Some of the comments on here are disgusting... The ladies are just trying to help families that can't afford to do it. It may be only once a year, but that once a year may be too much for some families. Am a 100% behind the ladies & I am more than happy to help them. Well done ladies :) x x
