National Grid is investing £30 million in the 345 pylons along the 116km long transmission line that runs from Harker, near Carlisle, to Quernmore in Lancashire.

The scheme will also enable the company to increase the efficiency of the line once new equipment has been installed at a substation at Old Hutton.

The work - which involves the installation of new wires and the repair and renewal of steelwork - will be carried out between this month and December.

There will be no interruption to electricity supplies.

National Grid is writing to householders and liaising with landowners directly affected by the work.

Advance notice will be given of any road and footpath closures.

A freephone number - 0800 389 7235 - has been set up for people to ring if they have questions about the project.

The line is part of a network that carries high voltage electricity across the country.
