Carlisle woman's delight at News & Star competition win

Summer may be over but the News & Star’s Super September giveaway is putting smiles back on the faces of some very lucky readers.
The latest winner to scoop a cash prize is great-grandmother Maureen Barnes, of Sandsfield Park, Carlisle.
After collecting coupons in the News & Star each day, she was over the moon to get a call telling her she had clinched the £1,000 jackpot.
Maureen, 72, and husband John are still deciding how to spend their unexpected windfall – but say they will use it to treat themselves.
“We’ve been on holiday this year so will either save it for next year or I could do with a new carpet, so I might spend it on that,” she said.
Since the start of the month, the News & Star has been giving readers a chance to make it a Super September.
As well as daily chances to win £250, regular readers have been collecting tokens to be in with a chance of clinching the £1,000 jackpot prize.
Maureen, who buys the paper every day, said she didn’t really expect to win.
“About 20 years ago I was always winning things – microwaves, garden furniture, meals for two... then I think my luck ran out. But I’ve been entering quite a few again lately. You’ve got to be in it to win it after all,” she said.
“I was quite shocked when they rang.
“I’d just been reading a story in the News & Star about a woman who won a bracelet and thought that was nice. Then I got a call to say it was the evening news and I’d won £1,000. I like surprises, especially ones like that!”
Maureen, who has five grandchildren and a great granddaughter, adds her name to a growing list of News & Star competition winners.
