Lorry driver arrested after crash with car near Penrith

A 27-year-old lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving following a smash near Penrith.

A woman passenger had to be cut from a Renault Clio car and was taken to hospital after the crash on the A66.

The lorry driver, from Kent and the Clio driver, a man, aged 74, from Wigton, were also taken to hospital.

A police spokeswoman said that the injuries sustained were “non life-threatening”.

The collision happened at around 2.30pm yesterday at the temporary roundabout close to the Carleton Hall police headquarters.

The police spokeswoman said the cause of the crash was being investigated.

Bruce Wilson, watch manager for Cumbria Fire Service, said: “It was quite a bad smash, with a big impact on the car.

“The roof had to be removed using hydraulic cutting equipment to release the casualty who was transported to hospital by ambulance.”

A section of road close to Carleton Hall police headquarters was closed for an hour.

Police have urged anyone who saw the crash, or the circumstances leading up to it, to contact them on 101.
