Long-serving Maryport councillor Bill Cameron to stand down

Maryport councillor Bill Cameron is to stand down next year after 39 years in politics.
The 86-year-old, who represents Maryport West, last month said he would fight the county council election next May.
But in a statement last night he said he was stepping down, blaming boundary changes.
He said: “Once again we see a change in local government boundaries. I sometimes wonder if this is just a move to keep a civil servant in a job.
“This does, however, present me with the perfect time to say, to the people of Maryport, that I will not be standing for re-election to the county council.”
