It helps with 20,000 away fans treating it like a cup final and a team approaching the match with the same intensity. Ghana’s full-on effort – coupled with a home side full of players who actually had something to prove – made for a spectacle far better than the usual insipid kick-abouts that play havoc with the Premier League season. Why not make it an annual event?
And given the way his appearance on the sidelines cranked up the volume, maybe Danny Welbeck should present a trophy to next year’s winners.
