A vandal who went on a night-time wrecking spree has been locked up for a year.

Adam Roper, 31, targeted vehicles in Fletchertown, near Aspatria and Whitehaven which all belonged to the parents of two ex-girlfriends.

Roper used parts of a socket set which were stolen during a garage break-in at Waverton to smash windows of a Suzuki Splash, a Citroen Berlingo and a Toyota Yaris in October last year. Tyres were also slashed.

He was jailed for 12 months at Carlisle Crown Court having admitted one count of burglary and three criminal damage charges.

Roper, of Langrigg, near Wigton, was said to have a number of previous convictions.

He had harassed one of his former partners and assaulted the other in separate incidents.

As a result of those, he was made the subject of restraining orders which prevent him from contacting the two women indefinitely.

The court heard Roper was under the influence of alcohol and Valium when he took part in the burglary - described as a joint enterprise - and then carried out the damage.

David Thompson, defending, said the "trigger" had been a telephone call with one of the ex-partners which had an "emotional effect" on Roper.

But, sentencing, Judge Peter Davies said: "I regard these offences as being a course of manipulative and sinister conduct, and you will be going to prison."

In addition, new restraining orders which now prohibit Roper from also contacting the two ex-partners' parents were put in place by the judge.
