THE world famous Herwick Lamb is on sale in a Cumbrian butchers' chain.

Cranstons Butchers will be selling the Lake District meat throughout February and March.

The Herdwick breed has been farmed in Cumbria for hundreds of years, and is best known for its grazing methods - whereby they roam high in the Lakeland Fells, feasting off the greenery.

Herdwicks, or Herdies as they are affectionately known, are among the toughest of Britain's breeds of hill sheep, grazing upwards of 3,000 feet and have come to characterise the Lake District.

Herdwick lamb will be available to purchase from Cranstons Food Halls in Penrith, Brampton and Orton Grange.

Roger Cranston, the company's operations director, said: "Throughout the year we like to stock specialist breeds such as Herdwick and Solway Salt Marsh Lamb, giving our customers the opportunity to sample unique tasting regional meats."
