Around 50 people took to the streets of Workington yesterday to commemorate Easter.

The crowd took part in a walk, organised by Churches Together in Workington and District, followed a trail of 14 posters, displayed in town centre businesses, depicting the suffering Jesus experienced on Good Friday.

The walk began at the United Church in South William Street and stopped outside businesses including The Stilwell Studio, The Hungry Caterpillar, Guise, Alison's Attic and Tognarellis for Easter readings and prayers for the businesses, town and wider community before finishing at The Coastline outside Laura Ashley with a hymn.

The event was attended by members of churches of all denominations across the town, as well as Archdeacon of West Cumberland the Ven Dr Richard Pratt, representing the Diocese of Carlisle.

The Rev Heather Lowe, curate at Harrington and Distington, who was among those who organised the walk, said: "It was great. More people came than we anticipated. I think it's been a great witness."

Dr Pratt added: "It was really good that so many churches were represented."

Public commemorations of Easter continued this morning with an open-air service at the harbour at sunrise, attended by more than 20 people.
