A WOMAN has been hospitalised after plunging 30 feet down an embankment in north Cumbria.

She had to be carried to safety by members of Penrith Mountain Rescue Team following the fall down a rocky area of the river Eden at Lacy's Caves, near Lazonby.

The woman, who is believed to be in her fifties and from Carlisle, was treated by medics from the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) for serious head, neck and arm injuries.

A GNAAS spokesman said: "The aircrew doctor and paramedic team were dropped off by the helicopter and had to make their way on foot through a woods and then scramble down to the patients location."

Members Penrith MRT used a stretcher and rope gear to lift the woman back up the embankment before carrying her to the helicopter.

Following the incident, which happened around 1.30pm on Monday, she was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for further treatment.
