A pensioner suffering from severe chest pain has been airlifted from a Cumbrian fellside.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was scrambled to help the 65-year-old man who was walking on the Whiteside/Hopegill Head ridge above Lanthwaite Green.

Volunteers from the mountain rescue team immediately called on support from a Coastguard S92 rescue helicopter due to man's condition and the remoteness of the site above Crummock Water.

Members ascended Whiteside from Lanthwaite Green, with the first arriving at the scene just before 2pm, about an hour after they were alerted.

The rescue helicopter from Prestwick arrived and landed shortly afterwards.

The man was treated at the scene and his condition monitored as he was stretchered to the helicopter and flown to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

A total of 18 members of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team were involved in yesterday's incident.
