TELECOMS giant Virgin Media is set to open a store in Carlisle.

The company has plans to set up shop in The Lanes Shopping Centre on Friday.

It will take up residence in a unit opposite Muffin Break and close to the soon to open Primark store.

The firm has already submitted a signage application to Carlisle City Council.

A spokeswoman for the company said: “I can confirm that we will have a new store opening in The Lanes Shopping Centre on October 7.”

She added that the store would feature areas where the company’s cable TV and broadband services would be demonstrated and customers would be able to look at its range of mobile phones.

She did not though confirm how many jobs would be created there.

This is the latest new store in Carlisle.

Toys R Us moved into The Lanes after a three-year absence from the city earlier this year and clothing firm Jack Wills has secured permission for a shopfront on English Street last week. Australian retailer Smiggle has also opened its 75th UK store in The Lanes this month.

Primark is also set to open its store in The Lanes on Thursday.

Holly Woodhead, marketing manager at The Lanes, said: “We are really excited about this, it is a bit of competition for Sky [which has a store in another part of the shopping centre].

“They should do well.”
