Residents of three West Cumbrian villages gathered to spruce the area as part of a community initiative.

Sixteen volunteers cleaned-up Bridgefoot, Little Clifton and Greysouthen on Saturday.

Jackie Grey, 40, of Little Clifton, was one of the organisers.

She said: "It was really successful, we collected around 26 bags of rubbish and other items such as a Christmas tree and some tyres that had been abandoned.
"I'm very proud, with a couple of residents we just decided we'd get together and clean-up the area a little bit, we thought it could do with a tidy up. Allerdale council lent us the pickers.

"We wanted to do it for the Great British Spring Clean in March but we were all busy, so we thought we didn't need to do it on the official week.

"We've managed to cover quite a wide area and we were out for about an hour and a half, we had tea and cakes at Bridgefoot village hall afterwards.

"We're hoping to do it once again this year in autumn and hopefully make it a regular thing.

"A lot of people were stopping and asking what we were doing, so hopefully we'll get more people involved too."
