Vandals have damaged a north Cumbrian town's Christmas tree.

Police are investigating damage to the metal frame of the tree and plants in containers in Penrith town centre on Saturday late evening.

It will cost almost £1,000 to repair.

The tree was funded by Penrith BID, which made up of local businesses, and had been put up outside NatWest bank on Devonshire Street.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "The people of Penrith take pride in their town and it is so disheartening that someone did this.

"The town continues to sparkle during the festive period and the public response so far on social media to this incident is a credit to the local people."

A police van which was parked on Devonshire Street had the glass from the wing mirror stolen at a similar time.
