A van driver has admitted dangerous driving after a head on crash on the A66 which saw a man break "most of the bones in his body".
Jerry Bouma, 44, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today, where he admitted causing serious injury to John Haram by dangerous driving.
Bouma, a Dutch national, also admitted driving with excess alcohol in relation to the same incident.
The charges follow a head-on collision on the A66 near Temple Sowerby, on October 24, which left the road closed for several hours.
This involved a Renault Master van, driven by Bouma, and a Nissan Qashqai in which Mr Haram, of South Shields, is said to have been a passenger.
Prosecutor Beccy McGregor told the court Mr Haram was airlifted to hospital having suffered "life-changing" injuries.
"Effectively breaking most of the bones in his body," explained Ms McGregor.
Judge Peter Davies adjourned the case until December 12, when Bouma, of Oudewater, Holland, will be sentenced at the crown court.
In the meantime he was remanded in custody.
