Campaigners are calling for urgent action to improve a notorious junction on the A66.

A rush-hour collision between two cars caused long tailbacks on the busy road.

And those who have been fighting for a roundabout to replace the staggered junctions at Broughton and Brigham, say this latest crash shows just how important it is for immediate changes.

The crash, which did not result in any injuries, occurred just days after highways chiefs revealed that exploratory works for a roundabout would take place in the next couple of months.

Although welcomed by the campaigners, they have major concerns that it will not actually be built until 2018.

Kier Construction, working on behalf of Highways England, has revealed plans for a four-way roundabout in the middle of the two junctions.

Mick Crombleholme, of Great Broughton, has been pressing for improvements since 2012.

He is pleased that steps are finally being taken, but is concerned at the length of time it will take.

Mr Crombleholme said: "This latest crash underlines what we have always said.

"Somebody has only got to stall on that junction and if a lorry was coming the other way, it wouldn't be able to stop in time.

"I want the roundabout built a lot sooner than 2018. This has been going on for a long time now, even before I got involved there was a lot of people wanting changes at that junction."

Sue Hannah, another passionate campaigner, shares his views.

She said: "I will be relieved when the roundabout goes in.

"If it's 2018, I will bite my tongue and pray it never gets pushed back. And if it happens earlier, great."

In a posting on Facebook Brigham Parish Council said if all goes to plans work would start work in 2018.

It is urging people to email comments on the roundabout design to Terry.Carling@kier.co.uk

Also on Facebook Jean Lack posted: "Trying to get onto the A66 from Broughton when you need to turn right is a nightmare at peak times and you can literally be stuck for ages before there is a suitable gap in the traffic to pull out safely."

Bron Stringer wrote: "At long last, how many years has this been needed? It's a terrible junction!"

Scott Bromley added: "Why is a roundabout needed on a very busy road? If you can't turn right from Broughton turn left into Brigham then go towards Workington. Big waste of money on my opinion."

Copies of the plans have been sent out and Kier is asking for opinions.
