Two lanes of the M6 through Cumbria remain closed this morning, while work continues to clear the scene of a lorry crash.
The lanes of the busy motorway are closed southbound between junctions 41 and 40 - between Catterlen and Penrith - to allow for a "complex recovery" operation to be carried out.
It follows a crash yesterday afternoon in which a goods vehicle overturned and plunged down an embankment.
Delays and queuing traffic were reported throughout the afternoon.
The crash, which happened about a mile north of junction 40, involved a lorry.
A dramatic image of the scene, released by Cumbria Police, shows the overturned vehicle had crashed through a barrier on the side of the motorway.
Police were alerted at 2.51pm and emergency services rushed to the scene.
A team from the Great North Air Ambulance Service was also scrambled.
Firefighters stabilised the vehicle and freed the trapped driver, helping him onto a spine board and handing him into the care of paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service.
A statement issued by Cumbria Police yesterday said: "The injuries of the [HGV] driver are not known at this time but are not believed to be life threatening."
