Whether your palette favoured sweet treats or savoury snacks, there was something for everyone at Carlisle's inaugural Foodies Fest.

Traders from across the county descended on the city's centre offering a range of homemade products to hungry shoppers.

While adults were able to quench their thirst by stopping off at the Carlisle Brewing Company's yurt, selling 'prosecco and pints', youngsters were kept entertained in the Kids' Zone with facepainting from Silly Gilly and Jason the Juggler, among others.

Cooking demonstrations were also held by Sean Wilson, who is better known for playing Michael Platt in Coronation Street and Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines.

"Since I was young it's something that I've enjoyed doing and after Coronation Street it's something that I wanted to focus on," he told the News & Star.

Having made a range of dishes, including seabass, beef and Yorkshire puddings and a meringue, he explained: "I've just been making the things I like making.

"We had children coming from the audience to help us. I just wanted to make it fun for everyone."

Elsewhere, Christine and Tony Crosland started making cupcakes around four years ago. The couple from Hayton, near Aspatria, said that their most popular creation is 'Death By Chocolate'.

"It started around four years ago," Christine said. "My daughter came home from university and saw me baking. She said that I should start selling the cakes I was making. It grew from there, really."

Tony added: "We tend to do a lot of the agricultural shows and then we do anything else that we're invited to as well."

Although she enjoys baking, Christine continued: "It's more of a job now, rather than a hobby, but it's something that I still love doing."

Also at the festival was Thomas Marshall, who runs The Fudge Store with his wife Sherelle. "We were originally based at Dunmail Park, but we've just moved to a stall in The Lanes," he said.

"The most popular flavour we're selling at the minute is definitely the salted caramel. It seems to be an 'in' flavour but surprisingly the licorice is another one that everyone likes.

"Our most unusual one is chilli and chocolate, which I think started in Mexico but a lot of people try it because it's so unusual."

Katie Smith and Mark Wakeman set up their business - Food in the Fells - in Ambleside last November and also own a cafe of the same name near Ambleside.

Their products offer a more savoury option, specialising in pasties and pies. "I've been working in catering since I moved to the Lake District 19 years ago," Katie said. "It's something I've always enjoyed doing. Mark's a bit different, though, he was working in construction so it's been a complete career change for him."

The pair pride themselves on using local products. "It's something that's very important to us," Katie added. "When we've got so many great suppliers in Cumbria then it makes sense to use what's around you and I think our customers really appreciate that."

Offering something slightly different - and a somewhat acquired taste - were comedy pairing Toni Super-Mare and Mercedes De La Zouch who together make up A Matter of Taste.

"You've heard of Heston Blumenthal using different food combinations, well we do the same but on a budget," explained Toni. "We've got a Cumberland sausage, put it with pease pudding then to honour Cumbria's famous sticky toffee pudding, drizzled toffee sauce on it."
