A DRUNKEN thug who punched a woman friend in the face has avoided an immediate jail sentence.

Carlisle Crown Court heard 30-year-old Dylan Bawn was high on alcohol and drugs when he attacked Kerry McAvoy in Cleator Moor.

Miss McAvoy suffered a cut to her chin and needed stitches after an incident which occurred in the early hours of May 12 at the home of a third party.

Bawn admitted assaulting Miss McAvoy, causing her actual bodily harm, and was sentenced at the crown court today by Judge Peter Davies.

Judge Davies heard Bawn had 136 offences on his criminal record, including a number of previous assaults.

But after being told the defendant would benefit from help to tackle his issues, Judge Davies suspended a 12-month prison sentence for two years.

Bawn, of Main Street, Frizington, was ordered to complete a 50-day rehabilitation requirement.
