Three people were arrested after bloody scenes in Carlisle.

There were reports of a knife being seen during the incident, which happened behind shops in Petteril Bank Road, Harraby, yesterday afternoon.

A 36-year-old man from the city was taken to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary with a head injury.

He was treated overnight, but later discharged.

One eye witness told the News & Star that there was blood in the alley behind the shops.

A spokesman for Cumbria police said: "The area was busy with people at the time and it was likely witnessed by those living in the area or possibly by those picking up children at a nearby school."

He confirmed that officers were investigating the possibility that a knife was used.

Two men and a woman were arrested shortly after the incident, and questioned on suspicion of affray.

Those arrested were a 34-year-old man from Carlisle, a 38-year-old woman from Carlisle and a 42-year-old man from Penrith.

They have been released on police bail until April 6.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call Detective Constable Catherine McFadden on 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
