A spate of thefts from vehicles in north Cumbria has prompted a police call for owners to be vigilant.

Officers have received six reports of thefts taking place in Longtown between Friday and today and owners have been reminded that insecure cars and vans are an "easy target" for criminals.

An appeal has been made for anyone with information relating to any of the recent incidents to get in touch, while residents are also being urged to ensure that doors and windows remain locked.

Sergeant Scott Adams, of Cumbria police, said: "Vehicles can be seen as an easy target for criminals as cars may have items left in glove compartments or in boots and some people leave tools in vans overnight.

"These incidents occurred during night-time hours where doors have been left insecure. Offenders will not think twice when stealing from vehicles is made easier by unlocked doors or windows.

"As well as locking doors and windows being locked, making sure nothing of value is left in your car or van overnight is a simple, but effective, method of ensuring your possessions aren’t stolen.

"Also consider where you are parking your vehicle. Criminals tend to operate in quieter areas where visibility is reduced. If you have a garage use it, if you don’t ensure alarms and immobilisers are set.

"Please always lock your vehicle when leaving it unattended, even if it is for just a minute. It only takes seconds for someone to come along and open the door and make off with your belongings."

Anyone with information should call Cumbria Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
