North Cumbria’s flagship agricultural event, the Cumberland Show, is moving locations.

The Cumberland News has learned that, from next year, its new home will be on farm land at East Park, Brisco, on the outskirts of Carlisle, the home of the Coulthard family.

This is the fourth venue the show has had since it was first held in 1832.

For the past six years the biggest date in the area’s country diary has been staged at Carlisle Racecourse, chosen as it was considered less prone to flooding and also offered indoor facilities.

But show organisers said they had been searching for a site that would bring all sections of the show together in a more compact layout.

Chairman Robert Wharton said: “The layout of the show on the new site is still work in progress, but we have a blank canvas to design the show within the new fields we have. It is a very exciting time for the show.

“The racecourse have been wonderful landlords for the past six years. We can’t thank them enough for all their help over the period.”

The annual countryside jamboree was forced to move from Rickerby Park in 2010 to the racecourse, after the previous year’s show had to be called off at the eleventh hour due to severe flooding.

Geraldine McKay, Carlisle Racecourse’s general manager, said they had been “delighted” to step into the breach when Rickerby Park was flooded.

“We have enjoyed some wonderful show days here over the last six years,” she added. “And we would like to wish Robert and the show committee all the very best for 2017.”

Cancellation of the event in 2009 as the River Eden burst its banks cost organisers about £60,000.

But the figure would have been twice that if sponsors and other participants had not waived their rights to refunds.

The new site for the event is close to the Brisco crossroads and less than one mile from the M6. Next year’s show will be held on June 17.
