Superstore giant Tesco is to cut the opening hours at two shops in west Cumbria.

Whitehaven and Workington are among 76 stores that currently trade 24 hours a day.

When the change takes effect, they will close their doors to customers between midnight and 6am.

The company says the reduced hours will improve the shopping experience for customers.

The changes nationally are due to take place between March 14 and April 11 this year.

A statement says being responsive to the way customers want to shop means making more efficient use of time and resources, making savings which can be passed on to customers.

Retail director Tony Hoggett said: “We’re always thinking about how to serve our customers better in each of our stores and with the growth of online grocery shopping, these stores saw very few customers during the night.

“It makes much more sense for colleagues at those stores to focus on replenishing the shelves instead and making sure they’re fully stocked when they open their doors at 6am."

About 400 Tesco shops are open 24 hours a day.
