A prolific teenage criminal broke into a family's north Cumbria farm in the dead of night Carlisle Crown Court was told.

Mark Young, 18, stole two sets of car keys during the burglary near Wigton on October 15 last year.

Unsuccessful attempts were made to remove two vehicles from outside the occupied property. Young fled but was detained by police several hours later close to the Edward I monument near Burgh-by-Sands.

He pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, driving while disqualified and having no insurance for a Citroen Saxo found near him at the time of his arrest.

Young - who has 44 offences on his criminal record - also admitted breaching a court order which prevented him from driving any vehicle at night.

Having heard Young had spent the equivalent of 15 months in custody on remand, Judge Peter Davies imposed a two-year community order.

Young, of Bower Street off Wigton Road, Carlisle, must complete a rehabilitation requirement and "thinking skills" programme.

He was also banned from driving for one year.
