A major road closed after a crash involving a tanker has been cleared.

Emergency services were called to the scene, on the city's western bypass, one of Carlisle's busiest roads, at 7.20am.

The collision, between a car and the tanker on a stretch of the A689 between Burgh Road and Dukes Drive, forced the closure of the route.

Diversions were put in place, taking motorists through the city itself.

But that brought traffic to a standstill across Carlisle, with reports of delays on the motorway too.

Firefighters had to cut a woman free from the car. The 45-year-old, from Maryport, suffered minor injuries.

Recovery of the vehicles took some time and the road reopened at about 11am.
