A popular Carlisle footbridge is closed until further notice because an inspection has raised structural concerns.

A routine inspection has identified "structural risk" at Memorial Bridge in Rickerby Park. It is commonly known as the suspension bridge among locals.

Cumbria County Council has issued a short statement on its social media channels late this afternoon.

It says: "We apologise for the inconvenience, however this is a matter of public safety.

"Further works to understand the issue and identify plans for repair are scheduled early next week."

The bridge spans the River Eden and links the area of Stoneyholme golf club with Rickerby Park.

It is a popular recreation spot, particularly with joggers, dog walkers and families.
