Superheroes assembled to give one Marvel-mad teenager a truly fitting send-off.

Batman, Superman, Captain America, Iron Man and more turned up to the funeral of 15-year-old Callum Todd yesterday as the youngster's friends and family made sure his love of all things superhero shone through.

Despite it being a dark and damp day the range of colourful costumes and comic book t-shirts brightened up the sombre occasion ensuring Callum's passion was at the forefront of everyone's thoughts.

Callum, who was a pupil at Carlisle's James Rennie School, died on October 2 and such was his popularity that there was standing room only at his funeral in the city's crematorium.

Scores of his family and friends waited outside the building as the teenager's uplifting Marvel-clad coffin arrived at the venue.

Everyone was played into and out of the ceremony to tunes from some of Callum's favourite films, including Pirates of the Caribbean.

Callum was a loved step-son of Darren, son of the late Claire, older brother to Ryan and grandson to Susan, Craig and Robert and son to Kevin.

Claire sadly passed away in July last year.

He will also be missed by his cousins, aunties, uncles, stepsister Louise and step-mam Laura. The teenager also spent time in Jigsaw, Cumbria's Children's Hospice, based in Carlisle.

During the poignant yet upbeat service the carers who helped make Callum's special were praised and thanked for their work.

Funeral celebrant June Hearsey led the service wearing a blue Superman t-shirt. She read out some memories of Callum on behalf of his family.

She said: "Darren tells me he could talk about Callum forever; he was and always will be his favourite topic, his nana Sue says Callum sometimes forgot he had his own family as there were so many people who simply loved and cared for him, he was just a very special boy who touched so many lives.

"Callum had a smile that would light up any room, he was a flirt and Darren compared him to Hugh Hefner as he just had this special innocent magnetism that simply attracted the ladies, the innocence is clear to see in all his photographs. He had a curiosity that was almost magical."

The reading continued: "Callum was a very happy boy right from day one he kept everyone going with his constant need for attention, his jokes and laughter, Darren jumping around the house with a pirate hat on and carrying a sword, Callum loved it.

"Life simply revolved around Callum, Saturday night parties the music on and dad dancing, piggy backs around the living room Callum loving every minute.

"His younger brother Ryan was very protective of Callum and he took on the role of big brother, Callum never cried only when he had laughed so much, he was just so cute."

A photo slideshow was played to those at the funeral showcasing some of Callum's happiest times with his family and friends.
