A trader's application to hold a stall in Workington has prompted fears the town will end up with an “informal Sunday market”.

Jagdeep Puri, of Clay Street, Workington, has applied to Allerdale council to sell phone accessories from an 8ft by 6ft stall at the junction between Upton Street and Central Way.

He wants to trade every Friday from 9am to 4pm and on Sundays from 11am to 4pm.

Allerdale council launched a consultation which sparked the opposition of Workington Town Council and Geraud Markets, the company which operates a town market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Workington Town Council said: “Councillors have raised concerns over the Sunday hours the vendor would like to operate.

“They feel that introducing a stall on a Sunday could set a precedent for additional stalls to follow suit. This could possibly lead to an informal Sunday market, having a negative impact on local businesses.”

Geraud Markets said: “We are not in favour of allowing street trading like this.

“The trader is a market trader with Workington market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“We worry that this would set a precedent to other stall holders and that we would end up with a miniature market on non-market days.”

But Toni Magean, town centre area manager, said he had no objections, since the request was made for non-market days.

If licensing officers grant the application, this could bring an additional income of around £4576.00 to Allerdale council. The application is due to be discussed on Friday, September 30.
