Stars of the big screen descended upon Keswick this evening, for the world premiere of the new Swallows and Amazons film.

Kelly Macdonald took selfies with fans as she walked the red carpet outside Theatre by the Lake.

The star, who plays Mrs Walker, mother of John, Susan, Tatty and Roger,

told the News & Star the filming had been her first experience of the Lake District - but was delighted to be back.

"I'm glad that the premiere is in Keswick. We were filming here a year ago and it's good to be back."

On the Arthur Ransome book upon which the film is based, Kelly admitted she had not read it as a child, but had come to realise the influence its story had on those who read it.

She explained: "If you read it as a child it sticks with you forever.

"I think it's that thing of kids having an adventure - like Enid Blyton's Famous Five and the Goonies - and you just can't beat it."

Swallows and Amazons is set in the Lakes and was published in 1929. It was first turned into a film in 1974 and tells the tale of two families of children and involves sailing, camping, exploration and even piracy.

Much of the 2-16 film was shot around Derwentwater and Coniston, and so it seemed fitting that the premiere was held in Keswick.

The film opens to the public on August 19.
