Driving instructors and their pupils from Cumbria are set to join a convoy of learner cars raising cash for Children for Need.

The vehicles are hoping to make their way around the country in a bid to raise more than £100,000.

Carlisle driving instructor John Clifford, who runs Eclipse Driving School, is among those taking part in this year's Big Learner Relay for Children in Need.

Last year the event - which sees learner drivers taking a lesson as part of a nationwide relay in spot-covered cars - raised £99,600 nationally, with John totting up more than £300. It's hoped this year they can smash £100,000.

Covering 3,000 miles in total, the Big Learner Relay starts off in Northern Ireland on November 1 and moves around the rest of the UK from November 4, before finishing at Donington Race Park on November 18.

It will stop at almost 200 destinations in the UK and sees a number of cars moving from one place to the next.

John is the lead car, which will carry the Pudsey Top Box, on a leg of the journey from Carlisle to Ecclefechan on November 11.

His pupil is his 17-year-old son Liam who passed his provisional driving test in April, but is now aiming to gain his trailer licence.

"Basically it could be someone who is doing a pass plus course or there could be a provisional learner driver," explained John.

"Last year there were a couple of special educational needs pupils. Anybody can take part and they follow the convoy from one place to the next.

"It's quite a thing to see when you've got 10 or 15 learner cars all in a line, all covered in spots with the headboards on, convoying from one place to another."

To sponsor John or any of the other instructors taking part, people are asked to sign a spot and make a donation to Children in Need.
