The sentencing of a Cumbrian man found in possession of one of the largest illegal arms hauls ever seized in the north west has been postponed.

Paul Holmes, 50, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court earlier this week, where he admitted 12 firearms and ammunition offences. He had already previously admitted two others.

The weapons were located as part of a joint operation by Titan - the North West's regional organised crime unit - along with Cumbria Police and the National Crime Agency.

He was due to have been sentenced yesterday but the case stalled after a disagreement as why Holmes had the cache.

The prosecution claims there could have been no legitimate reason for the weapons and ammunition to be in his possession, but he insists he is merely "a collector" with a lifelong interest in guns.

Evidence will be called by both sides at the crown court on July 29.

Holmes was remanded in custody.
