The search for a woman reportedly seen jumping off a bridge will not resume.

A major search and rescue operation took place throughout the night, after a man reported seeing the person jump off Gote Bridge into the River Derwent at Cockermouth.

Cumbria Police, Cockermouth Mountain Rescue, Coastguard, an ambulance crew and firefighters were all at the scene at about 11pm.

Emergency services were also spotted at Broughton Bridge.

A spokesman for Cumbria police said: “Cumbria Police was called at 10.53pm, to reports that a woman had gone into the River Derwent off Gote Bridge a few minutes before.

"We searched the area as much as we could and were joined by a number of emergency services.

"An extensive search was carried out throughout the night. Inquiries will continue today, but a decision has been taken not to resume the search."

He added that the force currently has no missing person reports which match the woman's description, and inquiries are ongoing.

Three fire appliances took part in the search, with firefighters from Cockermouth, Workington and Whitehaven stations.

They used swift water rescue equipment to search in the river itself, moving downstream from Gote Bridge to the bridge at the A595.

A spokesman for Workington station said they were on scene until about 1.30am but had found no signs of a person.
