Rail passengers faced delays yesterday as firefighters tackled a huge blaze on an embankment beside the West Coast Main Line in Cumbria.
The alarm was raised shortly before 2pm.
A Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said that the fire involved around four thousand metres of grass on the west coast line railway embankment.
Overhead lines were isolated and trains stopped as firefighters tackled the blaze using hose reel jets and beaters.
A short time later, fire crews were called to another large grass fire on the A66 near Penruddock.
Around 30 acres of grass and stubble was on fire after a controlled burning got out of control. Crews used beaters and hose reel jets to tackle the fire.
