TRANSPORT police have confirmed that the man who died on the rail line near Penrith was a 60-year-old man from Carlisle.
The line was closed for several hours following Sunday's incident, causing widespread disruption.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Our officers were called to Plumpton, Penrith at around 2.50pm on Sunday following reports of a person being hit by a train.
“Colleagues from Cumbria Police and the North West Ambulance Service also attended but a 60 year old man from the Carlisle area was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious and the man's family have been informed.”
