Carlisle's bars, restaurants and clubs will cash in on one of the busiest nights of the year as thousands of revellers pack into the city for New Year’s Eve.

Champagne corks will be popping as revellers welcome the new year in style tomorrow.

The Halston Hotel on Warwick Road is hosting one of the biggest parties in Carlisle when 200 guests will enjoy canapes, a three course meal and dancing to The Bourbon Street Band.

Events manager Emma Slack said: "Ticket sales have been going well. We’re expecting about 180 to 200 people."

Among the other venues marking the occasion is The Circle Bar in Lowther Arcade, which is celebrating its 15th birthday, is holding a Festival of Tapas with five different courses.

The Dead Horse Gang band will provide live entertainment there tomorrow night.

At the Brickyard on Fisher Street, there will be a 1990s themed New Year’s Eve special.

Acts including The Spice Girls, Oasis, Whigfield, Nirvana, and Kylie Minogue are set to make up the playlist.

Doors open at 10am and admission is £3 on the door.

Restaurants in the city are also reporting good trade ahead of tomorrow night.

Many are full or have just a few tables remaining.

Scott Nicholson, from barbecue specialists Foxborough on Cecil Street in the city centre, said: "We were fully booked before we had even decided on the menu, which took us by surprise.

"We are serving our main menu from 5pm until 7pm and then our four course party menu at 8pm.

"We will be doing 65 covers and there will be music and a bit of a party.

"This is our first new year and we are really looking forward to it. I just hope we've got enough chairs."

The Jersey Boys tribute, Big Guys Don't Cry will perform two sets paying tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and some of the biggest stars of Motown at Harraby Community Centre Theatre.

The evening will also include a hot and cold buffet at 9pm, with a cabaret show at 10pm.

A few tickets are still available, priced at £25.

The Crescent Bar in Carlisle will host two acts.

Sally Thompson will take to the stage to kick-start the evening's celebrations before regular Carlisle singing duo Echo Trap.

Carlisle’s newest nightclub - Mint - on Botchergate will host Ultrabeat’s Ian Redman on the DJ decks. Tickets are £4 in advance.

The price of some drinks will be reduced next week at The Woodrow Wilson and The William Rufus, Lloyd's Bar in Carlisle.

The January sale runs from Tuesday until January 18.

The range of drinks featured in the sale are a real ale, a craft beer, one lager, two ciders, three wines, three spirits, two soft drinks, an energy drink and tea and coffee.

Andrew Hetherington, manager of Woodrow Wilson, said: "Department stores and shops hold their sales in January, so it is the perfect time to have a sale in the pub too."
