Worried residents of a West Cumbrian village have called a public meeting to encourage neighbours to have their say on plans for more than 100 new homes.

Seaton Parish Council discussed the plans for Low Seaton submitted by the trustees of the Copsey Family Trust at a meeting yesterday at the village's parish rooms.

Almost 30 people attended to voice their concerns and a public meeting has now been called tomorrow night at Seaton Methodist Chapel at 7pm, where concerned villagers will call on people to respond to the proposals.

Joan Armstrong, of Church Road, is one of the residents who will be at tomorrow night's meeting.

She said: "We want people to turn up to have a look at these applications and for them to voice any objections they might have.

"One of the main objections is road safety; Church Road is a deathtrap now without anymore houses."

Plans were revealed in February for 100 homes to be built in the field behind the village's Royal British Legion.

Planning applications have been lodged with Allerdale council for this development, four homes at Hillside, Camerton Road, and five homes north of Camerton Road.

Plans include a mixture of two, three, four and five-bedroom houses, arranged as a mix of detached, semi-detached and short terraces.

Part of the Royal British Legion would be demolished to create access to the new site and the club's car park relocated.

At yesterday's parish council meeting, villagers and councillors expressed concerns that the developments would exacerbate traffic problems in Church Road, increase flood risk in Barepot and that schools could not cope with the influx of children.

Chris Sellick, of Barepot, said his village would fight "tooth and nail" to oppose the developments because they fear the increase in flood risk.

Colin Vaughan, of Camerton Road, added: "Already Causeway Road is a bottleneck at the best of times.

"You're looking at 250 extra vehicles, it's a bit of a no-no down there."
