A man used butter on his wrist to free himself from handcuffs after going on the run from police.

Aaron Lee McEwan, 20, was arrested for a breach of bail in the early hours of yesterday.

He was handcuffed by police but as he was being put into their van he slipped one hand out of the cuffs and ran off.

District Judge Gerald Chalk sitting at Carlisle Magistrates' Court heard how McEwan of Waver Lane, Wigton remained at large for around three hours before being re-arrested.

During this time he used butter to free his other hand from the cuffs.

McEwan, who admitted escaping from lawful custody, had breached his bail by going into a social club from which he was banned.

He was remanded until September 2, when he will be sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court.
