Political debate was centre stage at the Sands Centre in Carlisle for last night's episode of BBC 1's Question Time.

Questions posed by Cumbrians in the audience sparked debates on some of the most topical issues currently facing the country.

They included Brexit and fears about the Repeal Bill and workers rights.

Members of the panel chaired by David Dimbleby were Ruth Davidson, leader of the Scottish Conservatives; Len McCluskey, general secretary of the Unite union; Labour MP Lisa Nandy; north west MEP and Ukip leader Paul Nuttall; and Kate Andrews from the think tank Institute of Economic Affairs.

Audience members included Irthington farmer Gordon Brown who asked "Will the Brexit divorce turn messy?" and health campaigner Heather Dempsey, from Whitehaven, who said improvements to the NHS "are not going to come from privatisation, it is going to come from investment".

Heather, 19, of Asby, said: "I was pleased to get a point in. There have been frustrations that more local concerns were not addressed but it could've run without the hospital getting a mention.

"I appreciate it is a national programme that travels around the country and last night the people on the panel weren't really from our area. So if I can give the issue some exposure and make some of the people around the country take notice then I was always going to give it a shot."
