Police are hunting the driver of a car which failed to stop after it was involved in a collision with a motorbike.

It happened on the A595 at the junction between Gosforth and Seascale at around 11.20am this morning.

The 55-year-old driver of the motorbike was taken to hospital following the collision. His injuries are described as non life-threatening and he remains in the West Cumberland Hospital in a stable condition.

Police believe the other car was silver, similar to a Peugeot 206 and will have damage to the back of it.

It was last seen heading into Gosforth and it could have headed south on the A595.

A police spokesman said: "We are appealing for any information as to the identity of the silver vehicle or its driver.

"If anyone sees a silver vehicle with rear end damage or knows any information about this collision then they should contact police on 101 and quote incident number 73 of today (Wednesday.)"

The road was closed while emergency services attended the scene but has since reopened.
